EMOTIONALLY SPEAKING
COPING WITH A CHRONIC ILLNESS
(Diabetes Management)
Objective: Empower the customer to understand the demands of chronic illness on
individuals and families and that depression is a natural part of the disease.
Scope of Class: We begin with an explanation of acute and chronic illness. We
explain how chronic illnesses impact a person physically, mentally and
emotionally. The correlation between chronic illness and depression is
explained. Since the incidence of depression is relatively high for persons with
chronic illnesses, we discuss recognizing symptoms of depression and common
treatments for depression. Personal coping mechanisms for depression are
presented. The class closes with knowledge on a simple change process and how to
keep a journal to document progress in lifestyle change.
